Villanova, PA (TSN) – Steffi Graf and fifth-seeded Monica Seles advanced to the quarterfinals Thursday at the Advanta Championships in suburban Philadelphia. Also moving into the quarterfinals was sixth- seeded Nathalie Tauziat.
Graf held off Elena Likhovtseva, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4. Graf, who won last week in Germany for her second tournament win of 1998, is unseeded at this event. Graf, who won this event in 1992 and 1995, will face second seed and defending champion Martina Hingis for a semifinal berth on Friday.
Seles took out Ai Sugiyama, 6-3, 7-5. Seles, who won this event in 1991, takes on her doubles partner Natasha Zvereva in the quarterfinals.In the evening session, Seles and Zvereva combined to beat top-seeded Lindsay Davenport and Corina Moraiu 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in doubles.
Tauziat held off local favorite Lisa Raymond, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), and advanced to face wild-card entry Amanda Coetzer on Friday.
Seventh-seeded Patty Schnyder was upset by Amy Frazier, 6-3, 6-1. Frazier is rewarded for her effort by getting to face top-ranked Lindsay Davenport for a semifinal berth.
